Registration Information

Entry fees include a commemorative Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo T-shirt*, collectible finisher medal, a Detroit Zoological Society water bottle and entry into the Zoo immediately following the race (all participants must present race bib and enter the Zoo by 11:30 a.m. to receive complimentary admission), plus food and beverages, entertainment and children’s activities at the Post-Race Party, sponsored by Kroger. (*T-shirt availability is not guaranteed for registration after August 26.) Registration is required for participants ages 2 and older.

Online registration is available until 10 p.m. on Thursday, September 10. Once it closes, participants can register on site at the Detroit Zoo at the Run Wild Registration Tent near Main Admissions during packet pickup.

All registrations are final. No refunds.


The 5K/10K finish line is INSIDE the Zoo. Those wishing to see their family or friends finish the race must pay for entry wristbands.

Special Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo spectator admission wristbands cover access to the finish line, the Post-Race Party and admission to the Zoo for the day. Spectator admission does not include a T-shirt or finisher medal.

  • Adults: $15
  • Children (ages 2-18): $10
  • Children under two: Free

Spectator admission for this special event can be purchased in one of three ways.

  1. During online race registration.
  2. By clicking here.
  3. During packet pickup hours:
    • Friday, September 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    • Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Sunday, September 13, from 6 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Spectators with wristbands must enter the Zoo by 9:30 a.m.

Please note, Members cannot use their Membership to get into the Zoo until it opens to the general public at 10 a.m. Members who wish to participate in Run Wild must register for the event, and those who want to watch the finish must purchase spectator admission, as this is a before-hours special event.

Finish Line

Due to the proximity of animal habitats near the finish line, we ask that spectators do not bring in any noise makers (e.g., cow bells, whistles, air horns, etc.). Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Strollers are permitted for the Fun Walk and at the back of the 5K race. Only strollers designed for jogging/running will be allowed for the 10K race. For the safety of all participants, bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates and pets are not allowed at Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo. Chronotrack Timing System

Newton Timing will be the official timers of Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo using the ChronoTrack Timing System. 5K and 10K participants will have electronic timing tags attached to their race bibs. In order to receive an accurate time, please confirm your bib is clearly visible on the front of the torso, unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle), pinned in all four corners and not covered (jackets, runner belts, water bottles, etc.).


5K and 10K results will be available at the finish line and Post-Race Party shortly after the event.

Too Wild! times will be available online on Monday, September 14.

Packet Pickup and Registration

Packets will not be mailed. Packets will be organized by race bib number. Please check back closer to the event for your assigned number. Packets can be picked up and guests can register at the front of the Detroit Zoo on the following dates and times:

  • Friday, September 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 13, from 6 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

NOTE: Registration is available on the day of the race, Sunday, September 13, from 6 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Registration for each race will close a half hour prior to its designated race start time. Start timing mats will be turned off 10 minutes after the official start of each race. Participants starting after the equipment is turned off will be assigned gun time (time of the official race start).

Post-Race Party and Awards

All race participants (including Fun Walk) will receive a Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo finisher medal upon completion of their race. This unique collectible medal highlights a different animal each year! This year we are celebrating frogs!

Additional Age Group Medals are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age category for the 5K and 10K runs. Age categories are:

  • 9 and under
  • 10-14
  • 15-18
  • 19-24
  • 25-29
  • 30-34
  • 35-39
  • 40-44
  • 45-49
  • 50-54
  • 55-59
  • 60-64
  • 65-69
  • 70+.

In addition, plaques will be given to the overall top male and female finishers and top overall masters male and female (age 40+) for the 5K and 10K runs. No age category awards will be given for the Too Wild! combo. Participants in the Too Wild! combo will receive a special Too Wild! medal upon completion of the combo.

The 5K Awards Ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and the 10K Awards Ceremony is at 11 a.m.

Winners must pick up their awards by 11:30 a.m. day of event at the medals tent located at the Post-Race Party in the Main Picnic Grove. Medals will not be mailed. The Post-Race Awards Ceremony will take place immediately following the conclusion of the Run/Walk. The celebration, sponsored by Kroger, will include entertainment, food, beverages and children’s activities.
